Q: How to install a cd player in a 944 porsche?
Hi have just bought a 944 porsche and i also bought a cd player, however i have no idea where the wires are for me to connect it, i have looked underneath the dashboard and cannot figure out where to connect it. any help please?

A: Did you buy a head unit or a disc changer? I'm not sure about 85 and earlier but 85.5 and newer, pull the old radio and detach the harness. The speaker connections run to an external fade switch on the right hand side below the little compartment. They are wired front and back. I don't know where they come out of the switch as I just cut the ends off and left the switch in line. The connectors for the speakers have a spade and a post, one flat and one round prong sticking out. If its a head unit, everything you need is behind the old radio, its just a matter finding the wires you need. Also if your car is a 85.5 or newer, you have a powered antenna in your windshield, you'll need to hook that up to probably one of the blue wires from your head unit or you'll get no radio reception. Its not a bad idea to have a volt meter when you're hooking it up and either pull the fuses or disconnect the battery so you don't short anything out.

Q: what would be better to buy a mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 or a porsche 944 both turbo charged?
if you had a choice of buying a nice 3000gt vr4 with alot of mods to it or a porsche 944 with alot of mods on it and theres both turbo charged which would be better for drifting and straight drags which would be stronger and all around a better buy

A: Drifting-Porsche because it is RWD. Drag-VR4 because it is AWD and faster stock. The one that is more powerful depends on the mods they have. Stock, the VR-4 is fastest and most powerful. I would get the 944 Turbo. It is smaller, lighter, more fun to drive, and driftable because of RWD. Plus, it's a Porsche.

Q: Is a Porsche 944 a good first car?
I am turning 16 soon so I need to start looking towards a first car. I've liked the Porsche 944 ever since I was 10 and it is still a appealing car to me. What I want to know is if it would be good for a 16 year old. Repairing it would be no problem, it's just the things like insurance, model problems and safety I am worried about. Can anyone help? It's either this or I am going to start looking towards a Mitsubishi 3000GT. Clearly I will only use this car to commute to school and back. If I want to go fast, I'll just use my Gran Turismo. No need to become an idiot behind the wheel of a real car.

A: Everyone that says this car was made to be fast is incorrect. It is designed as a well handling car. The insurance shouldn't be terribly expensive either. Mine actually went down when I put my 944 on the road and my driving record isn't very clean. It features a galvanized steel body, stainless exhaust, just about everything under the car is aluminum so rusting isn't much of an issue either, but its till isn't a great winter car. Parts can be quite expensive for the 944, especially brake, electrical and exhaust parts. You'll want to know when the timing and balance shaft belts were changed last, if they go, you'll wreck the engine. The moonroof seal tends to leak and is about $100 to replace and it seems the hatch leaking is a common problem too. You'll want an 85.5 or newer, 85 and older versions were basically built from spare audi/volkswagen/porsche parts. The dash tends to crack from the sun and the driver's seat wears out from getting in and out. It wouldn't be a bad car if you find one with newer brakes and belts and good oil pressure ( between 2 and 3 bar at idle and 4 and 5 bar while driving).

Q: What are some upgrades or just anything i should do to my 1990 Porsche 944 turbo? performance wise?
i just bought it today for a little drift project.

A: Buy New tires ( a set for drifting and some good peformance tires from michen or yokahama. New Supension is Essential for Driffting. Spoiler upgrade Weight reduction to create more spectacular drifts and refurbish the cars paint and interior if you really like the car to look new

Q: how do i get my 1983 porsche 944 to start.has no spark going to distributor from coil it can push start though?
i replaced the ignition coil, dme relay, ignitin switch, fuses, and DME swap.. it only starts when i push start it and it shifts and runs just fine, and then when i turn it off, does not start.

A: Seems to me that no electricity is being delivered to the ignition system while the engine is in the 'crank' mode. This scenario is common to happen across many manufacture'ers of automobiles, spanning many decades of manufacture. Start by checking for voltage at the coil+ connection, while you 'crank' the engine. If it is below 5volts or non-existent, test that part of the circuit back from there. A weak coil/ignition module is first on the list. A bad 'feed wire' to these components may be the culprit. Lastly the ignition switch contacts may be burned away or needing re-set to better contact each-other. Tilt columns are bad about distancing the switch contacts away from each other, over time.

Q: what is the average cost of putting a 350 chevy engine in a porsche 944 ?

Q: 1984 porsche 944, Hi I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on the cone air filter system?
Compared to the original with a k and n filter in it. Anyone have these kind of cars and tryed it. Im wondering if it is going to suck in to much hot ajir from the engine compartment. Thanks in advance chase

A: While claims for the K&N filters and the cones are good, real data confirming it is pretty rare. The basis of why the improve performance starts from the idea that when Porsche designed the engine, they couldn't figure out how much air it needed and wound up starving it! Thus making a small up grade like this able to deliver power improvements! While it might be reasonable to think the original designers left a small amount on the table in exchange to improved filtering to protect the engine, you are not going to find much here on a stock engine... and what you will find would be as easily achieved by putting in a fresh paper filter (which would give the performance and provide better filtering). Now, if you are running a heavily modified engine (or a 951), then you might see a difference by bringing more air in... but in the stock state, this is not like a person trying to breath through a straw, it's more like them trying to breath through a 5 lane tunnel, and thinking that they will do better with a 6 lane tunnel! The stock system flows enough air as is, though the K&N filter or cone will flow better than a dirty paper filter. The open airboxes and cones do sound better. And while overall efficency gains are not likely, you may find they a small improvement in throttle response somewhere in the range... however, in some instances I've seen on dyno's, it not that these have been improved, but rather the other areas are now less responsive, making the perception seem like it's evened out! This can be an issue with drawing in more hot air.

Q: I have a 1983 porsche 944 looking for an engine swap kit?
I am looking for a kit that will fit an in-line 4 or 6 cylinder from nissan. the SR or RB engine family. If any one has any information on anything of this sort please reply. The upper balancing shaft has frozen up on the stock motor and I am ready for a change.

A: don't use a l-6 or v-6 engine as the driveshaft harmonics will tear up the driveshaft. unless you use a pushrod l-4, any overhead cam engine will be too tall and they are too hard to lean. if you must go japanese use a mazda rotary. you really will find repairing the std engine much more satisfying. the only real expense is the new pistons and if the bore is in good shape you won't need pistons.

Q: Stock boost pressure on a Porsche 944 Turbo?
I've looked everywhere, but can't find a definite answer. Anyone know?

A: Stock boost for a 951 is 11 psi.

Q: How are the Porsche 944's? Are they fast if they have the turbo. What r the specs (0-60, 0-100,top speed)?
Any Porsche 944 owners out their please answer thanks.

A: Porsche made a 944 Turbo. This car had over 200HP and went from 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and reached 149mph. Faster than a GTI, Civic Si, RSX Type S, Sentra SE-R. After time, cars lose power and speed. That is the fastest stock factory made Porsche 944.

Q: 1984 Porsche 944 question. Ihave been looking for a computer chip for more performance from the car.?
I have a performance products catologe but It offers the chip for the cars newer than mine. Where could I go to find a chip. Does anyone know of any good websites and catologes that offer parts.

A: http://www.performancechipsdirect.com/Porsche/944/

Q: What can I do to make my 86 porsche 944 faster?
I have put a chip in it and a k&n air filter i want to put a exaust system in it how much would a nice one cost and what would i need to get new headers? what else can I do to it thank you

A: The problem you face with the 944 is that outright speed simply isn't a strength of the car, and Porsche did not leave a lot on the table in terms of extra power that can be had by compromising other aspects... so, you're left with a couple choices. First, the one thing that makes any car faster is a good driver. And it's also the area most people tend to overlook and often the one thing most in need of upgrading! If you spend some money for some on track instruction or attend a PCA Autocross school or something similar, you'll do more for improving the speed of you car than anything else. The sad fact is that we drivers are most often the most limiting factor in the car. This will also enable you to better overcome the 944's weaknesses (power), and make the most of it's strengths (balance and handling). As a follow on to that, you may find further upgrades to it's strong areas to yield big improvements in performance that better allow you to keep up the momemtum of the car. Going that route of otherwise, the biggest bang for the buck would be performance tires. Tires are the only part of the vehicle that actually touch the road, and they are the main limit for performance. Better tires will give you better grip for accelerating as well as for maintaining speed out of a corner. The other 944 appropriate means to improve performance would be to look at what you can do to lighten the car... if the goal is more power to weight, the easier path on this car is to do away with weight! But all that said, if your goal is a car that rockets away from stop lights, you have the wrong car. You can look at engine swaps or forced induction upgrades, but in the end, these will all wind up being as expensive (and more likely, more expensive) than simply selling your 944 and getting a different car. If you want a faster 944, look at the 951 (ie, 944 Turbo) which will have more options for power. Or if just a faster off the line car, something American with a V8 would fit the bill (it won't have the balance and handling of the 944, but it will have alot of torque).

Q: Has anyone owned and drove a Porsche 944 everyday?
I was wondering how often it breaks down or the maintenance cost for each year. Also how long you owned the car and maybe the year. I love the car but have heard some bad things about them. Thanks

A: It is the poor man's Porsche, so it was a mass produced car for a cheaper market than the then 911 market. It has some cheapness to it, and it's actually more volkswagen and audi inspired, but Porsche built, especially on earlier models, and almost all audi and volkswagen on the first 924's. If you can slip into a good car, that is well kept, not driven hard, and you don't drive it like a Ferrari race car, it will be an okay car. So many buy into them expecting cheap corvettes. I would avoid the turbo models unless you want to throw down some money. Those can be problems, and very expensive to fix. I have seen many models get the chevy conversion when it comes times to replace the motor because it can cost half as much to get a cheap reliable LS-1 or 350 motor in there, than try to mess with the turbo motor. I was always fixing little things on the weekends. If you are not into working on stuff on the 944, you might not enjoy the car. I wished Porsche had spent a little more time on the engine engineering, but it's not the worse car, or garbage if you love a good Porsche that just needs a little extra TLC. Plus just because it is a Porsche, I would not drive it like a race car. What I would do is have good tires, and enjoy the handling with a near perfect 50-50 balance. I was able to make near 90 degree perfect turns going 50+ mph. All my other cars would drift or fish tail to do something like that. That doesn't work unless you have quality tires. ~The answers are especially negative. 944's are not that bad. They are an aging car (technically a classic iconic 80's cars), so some cars will need some repairs. I would shop carefully. You might find someone who has their car all fixed up--not on the down spin heading to someone's wallet. So some more searches on Yahoo, and more reviews before making your decesion.
